In an interview, he said it was because a female crew member pointed out to him that there were several nude women in the film and no male nudity. He decided immediately that it was unfair/uneven/sexist for that to be the case and agreed that it was a necessity to even it up, not only out of fairness but so that it would be more real.
He wrote and directed that -- nice of him to decide that beautiful penis shouldn't be hidden. Show that dick, writer / director / star / stud!
